Studiocanal has announced that a stunning new 4K restoration of Chaplin (1992), the BAFTA-winning, Oscar-nominated Charlie Chaplin biopic from Richard Attenborough, will arrive on 4K UHD and Blu-ray on 16th November via the new Studiocanal Classics label.

Legendary director Richard Attenborough brings us the epic story of a true cinematic icon, Charlie Chaplin. In this award-winning masterpiece, we follow Chaplin’s increasingly complicated life from a poverty-stricken music hall entertainer in England to eventual triumph in America. The story of Chaplin is the story of cinema as we watch him grow from developing silent-era slapstick to becoming one of the most important, pioneering fathers of filmmaking, the art form of a new century. But although he could reflect wondrous, magical humour in his work, his private life was marked by infamy, sadness, and a growing sense of loss.

Celebrating 50 years of Carolco Pictures, the studio behind the film and boasting a truly magnetic, career-defining performance from Robert Downey Jr. in the title role, Chaplin (1992) brings to life the extraordinary journey of one of cinema’s most iconic, complex, and influential figures. Charlie Chaplin, or Charles Spencer Chaplin Jr., was a pioneering artist, filmmaker, and creator who forged a new style of filmmaking through films ranging from The Kid (1921) to Modern Times (1936) and The Great Dictator (1940).

Supporting Downey Jr. is an exceptional ensemble cast including Chaplin’s own daughter Geraldine Chaplin as his mother Hannah Chaplin; Anthony Hopkins as his fictionalised editor and confidant; Dan Aykroyd as legendary producer Mack Sennett; Kevin Kline as silent film star Douglas Fairbanks; Marisa Tomei as pioneering silent screen actress Mabel Normand; John Thaw as theatre impresario Fred Karno; Paul Rhys as Chaplin’s brother Sydney; Penelope Ann Miller as leading lady and longtime silent-era collaborator Edna Purviance; Milla Jovovich as his first wife, actress Mildred Harris; Deborah Moore as his second wife, Lita Gray; Diane Lane as Chaplin’s celebrated screen partner and third wife, Paulette Goddard; and Moira Kelly in a cleverly cast dual role as Chaplin’s first love Hetty Kelly, and his final wife, Oona O’Neill.

Chaplin (1992) also features a soul-stirring score by celebrated composer John Barry.

Nominated for multiple Oscars and BAFTAs, Downey Jr.’s nuanced performance as the silent screen legend earned him the BAFTA for Best Actor. Portraying Charlie Chaplin’s life from his impoverished childhood in Victorian London to his rise as one of Hollywood’s first global stars, the film explores the triumphs, heartbreaks and controversies behind one of cinema’s most influential icons.
