Created by Katie Dippold, Widow’s Bay on Apple TV combines the horror of Stephen King’s Castle Rock universe, the setting of classics ranging from The Dead Zone to Needful Things, with nods to The Burbs, Mare of Easttown, The X-Files and Tales from the Crypt.
Widow’s Bay should be the next Martha’s Vineyard, and Mayor Tom Loftis (Matthew Rhys) knows it; hell, he has even invited a New York Times travel writer to do a puff piece that gets the tourists flooding in. But there’s also a problem. Widow’s Bay has a reputation among its locals, one that some might call a ‘curse.’
There are legends about cannibalism, a fog that turns seafarers into zombies, ghostly serial killers who stalk guest houses and a host of other evils. For many locals, including Wyck (Stephen Root), Widow’s Bay ain’t safe for tourists, and Tom’s plan is written in blood. But Tom isn’t going to let local folklore disrupt his economic vision for the future; after all, it’s all just hocus pocus, right?
Created by Katie Dippold, Widow’s Bay combines the horror of Stephen King’s Castle Rock universe, the setting of classics ranging from The Dead Zone to Needful Things, with nods to The Burbs, Mare of Easttown, The X-Files and Tales from the Crypt. However, while paying homage to all of these, Widow’s Bay is also unique in the landscape of TV comedy, horror, and fantasy; its ten-part run joyously bouncing from jump scares to joviality before offering us some of the best TV horror I have seen in a long time. Widow’s Bay is a show that defies simple explanation and rejects easy genre labels, and it’s all the better for it!
So, why not book an escape to this totally safe and normal, quaint island off the coast of New England? I dare you!
Widow’s Bay is now streaming in weekly instalments on Apple TV.
