What makes you, you? Is it your body? Your sexuality? Your gender? Or is it something undefinable? Over the years, many body-swap movies have explored the concepts of human identity and bodily change. Still, few have come close to addressing the deep questions the genre raises, opting instead for a comedic lens. Alex Schaad’s outstanding Skin Deep (Aus meiner Haut) is different as it tackles these big questions head-on alongside the social and psychological impacts a body swap could herald; after all, if you are unhappy with the body you have, why would you ever want to give back the one you have borrowed?

Skin Deep embraces a Midsommer-inspired atmosphere in its opening scenes as Leyla and Tristan arrive on a remote island, where they are met by Leyla’s childhood friend Stella and a secretive community of couples and individuals who have assembled to experience life in a new frame. Leyla and Tristan are to swap bodies with Fabienne and Mo, a couple who couldn’t be more physically and emotionally different to the young pair. But as they cautiously enter an ancient ritual that can be reversed at any time, neither Leyla nor Tristan understands the psychological impacts this transformation will herald.

Skin Deep Fantasia Review

Skin Deep is haunting, profound, and fascinating as it explores and unpicks fixed notions of human sexuality and gender through the eyes of a couple whose internal and external worlds are about to be transformed forever. However, Schaad’s compelling and stunning feature isn’t just interested in sexual fluidity, gender identity and the simplistic social labels we attribute to ourselves, but also the interface between physical and psychological disconnect. Here, he asks us to reflect on the foundations of mental well-being and the link between internal happiness and external appearance, and to consider whether the two live in harmony or conflict.

Skin Deep transcends genre labels as it embraces folk horror, science fiction, and a profoundly compelling human drama that shines through its cast’s exquisite performances and Schaad’s layered, detailed direction. Skin Deep is one of the most fascinating, bold and creative explorations of identity, transformation, sexuality and gender I have seen for many years.
