Stanley Kubrick’s anti-war masterpiece, Full Metal Jacket, arrives on 4K Blu-Ray on 21st September.
Based on Gustav Hasford’s 1979 novel “The Short-Timers,” Full Metal Jacket was produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick, with a screenplay by Kubrick, Herr, and Hasford. The film’s impact and messages are as vital today as they were at its 1987 cinema release, as Kubrick dissects the testosterone-fuelled world of military training and the realities of conflict and war.
Full Metal Jacket explores themes from Frederick Wiseman’s 1971 documentary Basic Training while focusing on the stark realities of a devastating war that nobody believed in. Like Kubrick’s other war movies, Paths of Glory and Dr Strangelove, Full Metal Jacket layers and deconstructs the very fabric of humanity as it explores the creation of the soldier and the war machine surrounding them. Here, the individual is ultimately less important than their ability to act without thought or feeling toward an ‘enemy’, making it not only one of the finest anti-war movies of the 1980s but also one of the most hotly debated.
Starring Matthew Modine, Adam Baldwin, and Vincent D’Onofrio, the brand new 4K restoration has been scanned directly from the 35mm camera negative, with Warner Bros. Motion Picture Imaging working alongside Stanley Kubrick’s former personal assistant, Leon Vitali, in the mastering process, making this new 4K release a must-have item for any collector.
