Stanley Kubrick’s anti-war masterpiece arrives on 4K Blu Ray on 21st September 2020. Based on Gustav Hasford’s 1979 novel “The Short-Timers,” Full Metal Jacket was produced and directed by Kubrick from a screenplay by Kubrick, Michael Herr and Hasford. The film’s impact and message as vital today as it was on its cinema release in 1987. In a movie that ultimately dissects the testosterone-fuelled world of military training and the reality of conflict and war. The film’s first half taking its inspiration from Frederick Wiseman’s 1971 documentary Basic Training. While the second half places the unrealistic bravado of training into the realities of a devastating war. Starring Matthew Modine (Birdy, Vision Quest), Adam Baldwin (Independence Day, Serenity) and Vincent D’Onofrio (Men in Black, Jurassic World). Full Metal Jacket remains one of the most impactful explorations of the Vietnam war ever made.
In common with Kubrick’s other war movies Paths of Glory and Dr. Strangelove, Full Metal Jacket layers its narrative with a highly effective deconstruction of humanity. And where Dr. Strangelove played with morality and a grotesque bureaucratic belief in superiority at any cost. Full Metal Jacket explores the need of war machines to deconstruct both individuality and identity in achieving success. The individual ultimately less important than their ability to act without thought or feeling toward an ‘enemy’ constructed by those who rarely see the horrors of conflict. In turn, making it not only one of the finest movies of the 1980s, but also one of the most hotly debated.
The brand new 4K restoration has been scanned directly from the 35mm camera negative. With Warner Bros. Motion Picture Imaging working alongside Stanley Kubrick’s former personal assistant Leon Vitali in the mastering process. Making this new 4K release a must-have item for any collector. Alongside this, the new ultimate collectors set includes a two-page booklet, character art cards and a replica theatrical poster.
