“Sometimes the smallest thing can turn the world on its head.”
After a summer of firsts for her – first kiss, first crush – Lily is coming to realise she likes other girls, something she can share with her gay best friend, Simon. However, a spiteful moment in the changing rooms marks her out as a target for bullying by some of her classmates. This becomes increasingly ugly and violent, impacting her mental health and self-confidence. Not knowing where to turn, she finds support from Simon and an older woman, Oonagh, to help her find the strength to face her bullies and be her true, authentic self.
Having made the highly acclaimed short film Lily (2016), director Graham Cantwell and award-winning Katie McNeice have developed it into a feature-length drama, Who We Love, featuring the same principal cast. Nominated for six Irish Film and Television Awards, including Best Director and Film, it stars Clara Harte, Dean Quinn and award-winning actress Amy-Joyce Hastings (The Tudors). There are also supporting roles from Danielle Galligan (Shadow & Bone) and Niamh McCormack (Everything Now), who are appearing in the upcoming Netflix drama House of Guinness.
Who We Love is an Irish coming-of-age drama that explores issues around bullying in schools and the cruelty that young gay and lesbian people can be subjected to, as well as depicting Dublin’s vibrant, sometimes dark LGBTQ+ scene.
