Following the award presentation, Academy Award-nominated Colman Domingo will appear in conversation on Saturday, October 12.
NewFest’s Executive Director David Hatkoff and Director of Programming Nick McCarthy have announced that Colman Domingo will be honoured with the NewFest36 Voice & Visibility Award during this year’s New York LGBTQ+ Film Festival. Individuals awarded this honour are recognised for exceptionally demonstrating NewFest’s mission to give voice and visibility to LGBTQ+ stories and artists. Recipients have played an active and essential role in empowering and advancing the LGBTQ+ community in the media. The award presentation will take place on Saturday, October 12 at 4pm at the SVA Theatre, with a conversation between Colman Domingo and Chris Murphy of Vanity Fair to immediately follow.
“Colman Domingo’s Academy Award-nominated performance as queer trailblazer Bayard Rustin in RUSTIN, the opening night film of NewFest’s 2023 festival, was one for the ages,” said NewFest Executive Director David Hatkoff. “His work in television, film, and theatre has resonated with LGBTQ+ audiences for more than 20 years, and he has channelled his infectious personality to bring voice and visibility to queer communities of colour and the LGBTQ+ experience overall. We are delighted to present him with this award and host him in conversation at The 36th Annual New York LGBTQ+ Film Festival.”
A NewFest alumnus, Colman Domingo has had a prolific career on the stage and screen, helping propel LGBTQ+ artists and stories in the mainstream media. His portrayal of Bayard Rustin in the acclaimed film RUSTIN, which premiered at NewFest35 last year, earned him Oscar, BAFTA, Screen Actors Guild, Golden Globe and Critics Choice nominations. Colman Domingo also won the GALECA LGBTQIA+ Film Trailblazer Award in 2024 at the annual Dorian Film Awards. Most recently, Domingo starred in and executive produced Greg Kwedar’s SING SING, which was released by A24 this past summer. Domingo has also appeared as Ali in the acclaimed HBO series EUPHORIA, for which he won a Primetime Emmy Award, as well as the limited series THE MADNESS, which will be available on Netflix on November 28th. Beyond film and television, Colman Domingo has appeared and written a number of plays and musicals.
