Paris Opera partners with Pathé Live and IMAX to bring Swan Lake to cinema screens

Paris Opera’s Swan Lake will arrive in IMAX locations worldwide on November 8 and in all theatres on November 10. Book tickets.

Paris Opera, Pathé Live, and IMAX® have unveiled a teaser trailer for Rudolf Nureyev’s Swan Lake, the world’s first-ever filmed-for-IMAX® ballet.

During his birthday celebrations, Prince Siegfried must choose a bride. Trying to escape reality, he dreams of a perfect love. His tutor tries to bring him down to Earth and reminds him of his duties. During a dreamlike getaway, the prince meets Odette, a princess who has been transformed into a swan by the powerful sorcerer Rothbart. Only true love can break the spell. Captivated, Siegfried promises Odette he’ll save her and invites her to his party. To trap the prince, the sorcerer sends his daughter Odile, disguised as Odette, to seduce him.

With more than 350 years of history, the Paris Opera is renowned for the quality and diversity of its programming at the Palais Garnier and the Bastille Opera, as well as the unique architecture of its two theatre houses. With more than 400 curtain-ups each year, the Paris Opera presents a diverse range of ballets, operas, and concerts, as well as a programme dedicated to young audiences, and welcomes approximately 900,000 spectators annually.

Pathé Live has been offering cinemas the opportunity to broadcast cultural events on their screens. In 2008, the company launched live cinema broadcasts from New York’s Metropolitan Opera in France. Pathé Live has also produced and distributed Comédie-Française (National French Theatre) shows in 500 cinemas since 2016. This programming is regularly completed by concerts, comedy shows, and documentary events, such as the Love Yourself in Seoul concert by K-pop hit group BTS or Mylène Farmer’s 2019 Le Film

In 2022, Pathé Live distributed the first-ever filmed for IMAX concert, Indochine Central Tour au cinema. Pathé Live’s latest successes include Jeremy Ferrari’s comedy show Anesthésie Générale in March 2024, which set a new box-office record for a live broadcast in cinemas in France and Michel Sardou’s latest concert.

Swan Lake required four days of shooting — two of which were shot without an audience, allowing cameras to be on stage alongside the performers. Shot exclusively with IMAX-certified digital cameras, the film offers audiences a larger canvas of the spectacular images specifically captured for the IMAX format. Sequences are brought to life, creating an experience unlike anything else as moviegoers are drawn into the beauty of the ballet like never before. Combined with next-generation IMAX precision sound that creates a truly immersive experience, Paris Opera’s production of Swan Lake in IMAX will offer moviegoers a premium and unforgettable experience featuring the excellence of the Paris Opera Ballet.
