Crossing arrives in UK and Irish cinemas on 19 July 2024. Preview screenings will take place throughout June and July
MUBI, the global distributor, streaming service and production company, today announced special Pride previews of Levan Akin’s (And Then We Danced) new award-winning feature, Crossing.
Lia, a retired school teacher living in Georgia, hears from a young neighbour, Achi, that her long-lost niece Tekla, a transgender woman, has crossed the border into Turkey. Hoping to bring Tekla home after a period of estrangement, Lia travels to Istanbul with the unpredictable Achi to find her. Exploring the hidden depths of the city, they cross paths with a transgender lawyer called Evrim, who helps them in their search. Humanistic and compassionate, Akin’s third feature is a heartfelt portrayal of overcoming the degrees of separation that divide us.
The moving, compassionate tale of identity, acceptance and unlikely connection that transcends borders and generations had its World Premiere at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year, where it was awarded the TEDDY Jury Prize.
Previews will begin at Riverside Hammersmith in London on Sunday, 23 June, as part of the cinema’s Pride programming.
The film will also screen in Brighton’s Duke of York Cinema on Friday, 19 July, as part of the Brighton International Trans Pride Film Festival in association with My Genderation. It will be followed by a panel discussion hosted by Fox Fisher, the artist, filmmaker, and co-founder of Trans Pride Brighton and BITFF.
In Ireland, MUBI & GAZE Film Festival will be presenting an exclusive first look at the award-winning film in Dublin, Galway and Cork on Sunday, 23 June, and in Belfast on Thursday, 27 June. The Dublin screening will include a special discussion panel featuring James Hudson (Programmer at GAZE Film Festival and Small Trans Library), Philippa Ryder (Activist, author, transwoman, Chair of Dublin Pride), and Pradeep Mahadeshwar (Visual artist, LGBTQIA+ activist & founder of Queer Asian Pride Ireland, QAPI & Queer Spectrum Film Festival QSFF).
