100% Uncut, 110% Disgusting! The Garbage Pail Kids Movie is a real treat of bad taste! The 1980s cult film The Garbage Pail Kids Movie will be released as a 3-disc Limited Collector’s Edition Media Book on 6 May. The snotty trading card film adaptation – yes, you read that right – oozes a pure 80s feeling!
Once Upon a Time, 1987 to be precise, a kid’s film based on a trading cards series broke all the rules, as it introduced us to Nat Nerd, Messy Tessie, Greaser Greg, Windy Winston, Foul Phil, Valerie Vomit and Ali Gator, the brilliant Captain Manzini and lovable teenage Dodger. Rod Amateau’s final movie was labelled one of the worst movies ever made, but time is a great healer, and watching The Garbage Pail Kids Movie now is an utter joy. It’s messy and totally nuts, but the performances of a young Mackenzie Astin as Dodger and Anthony Newley as the magical Manzini are great, as is the off-the-wall coming-of-age meets 80s fashion design story and the near-the-mark Pail Kids humour. It’s the kind of kids’ movie that would and could never make it to the screen now, and despite its flaws, that makes it a shiny, if slimy, gem that deserves reappraisal. Now, it’s finally coming to Blu-ray for the first time so that a whole generation can fall for its snotty charm.
Captain Manzini, a powerful magician who long ago gave up on humanity and set up shop as an antique dealer, has kept a lid on The Garbage Pail Kids dustbin spaceship, keeping the little darlings under control. But when his orphan friend and co-worker, the young Dodger, who also helps out in the shop, is bullied by a local gang, he accidentally sets them free, and chaos soon follows. But Dodger’s disgusting trash can friends are about to help him out in ways he couldn’t imagine in a tale that shows us true beauty comes from within, and growing up is just as messy and gross as the lovable rogues who live in a bin.
The Mediabook includes the film on Blu-ray (for the first time) and DVD, a 24-page booklet with a text by Marco Heiter, and special features such as the documentary 30 Years of Garbage: The Garbage Pail Kids Story, released for the first time in the UK, and interviews with cast and crew.
Trust me; it’s a film that has to be seen to be believed!
