When two company representatives from Tokyo (Ryuji Kosaka and Ayaka Shibutani) arrive in the village to hold a meeting, it becomes clear that the project will negatively impact the local water supply, causing unrest. IN BROAD DAYLIGHT REVEALS A SHOCKING TRUTH

Central City Media has announced that the hard-hitting drama IN BROAD DAYLIGHT, inspired by shocking real events, will be released in the UK on 19th January 2024.

IN BROAD DAYLIGHT reveals a little-known truth about residential care homes for the disabled that hides beneath the headlines. Nominated for Best Film and Best Director at the Shanghai International Film Festival, as well as receiving five nominations at the Golden Horse Film Festival in TaiwanIN BROAD DAYLIGHT is just the tip of a real social crisis iceberg, as pertinent around the world as it is in Hong Kong – and also questions whether journalism has lost its power to unearth the truth. Moving, disconcerting and above all, an important clarion call for compassion and respect, this is cinema at its most powerful and profound.

TRAMPS! TRAILER DROP

Making new waves with its world premiere at BFI Flare, the critically acclaimed, landmark feature-length documentary Tramps! from Kevin Hegge (She Said Boom: The Story of the Fifth Column, Sundowners) goes deep into the heart of Britain’s New Romantics scene, tracing how a group of outsiders transformed London’s underground art and music communities and its enduring influence and impact across the globe.

A decade in the making, this groundbreaking film follows how the New Romantics – AKA the Blitz Kids – became one of the most iconic cultural movements. Now, this radically important new documentary makes its UK digital debut on 11 December 2023, courtesy of Bohemia Media.

In the 1980s, following the 70s punk movement, a fresh wave of art students and fashion enthusiasts emerged in East London, breathing fresh life into British art, fashion, music and film and welcoming in a new era with the birth of the New Romantics.

Tramps! explores the evolution from squatted communes in the 1960s to 70s punk, leading to the flamboyant Blitz Kids and the seminal New Romantics in the 80s. The film takes us from The Blitz to Hell and introduces the faces, from the hugely influential Leigh Bowery, Mark Moore, Derek Jarman, Boy George, Marilyn, Steve Strange, and Rusty Egan, to the lesser-known but integral players in the movement. Figures such as John Maybury, Duggie Fields, Princess Julia, BodyMap founders Stevie Stewart and David Holah, Scarlett Cannon, The Roxy nightclub founders Susan Carrington and Andrew Czezowski, Les Child, Jeffrey Hinton and the great, late Judy Blame tell their fascinating tales in brand-new interviews, alongside rarely seen archive footage and proudly highlight LGBTQIA+ stories often erased from history.

The documentary examines how the long-established sense of hedonism was unexpectedly disrupted by the AIDS crisis, with some elements transitioning from the underground to dominate the mainstream through rave culture in the 1990s.

Focusing on the vibrant personalities that defined this movement and celebrating queer club culture, Tramps! revives one of the UK’s most iconic scenes and features a pulsating electronic soundtrack by Electrelane‘s Verity Susman and Wire‘s Matt Simms.

Meet Tramps! a one-of-a-kind documentary that celebrates the people and places at the forefront of a pivotal subculture whose influence can still be seen worldwide today.

TRENQUE LAUQUEN PARTS 1 AND 2, IN CINEMAS AND ON CURZON HOME CINEMA 8 DECEMBER

A critical hit on the international festival circuit after premiering at the Venice Film FestivalTrenque Lauquen is the beguiling, epic, genre-fluid mystery composed of two feature-length parts by Argentinian auteur Laura Citarella (Ostende).

A woman vanishes. Two men take to the road in search of her: they both love her. Why did she leave? Each one of them has his own suspicions and hides them from the other one, who – mysteriously – never truly becomes his rival. Neither is right – but is anyone?

This sudden run away becomes the hidden core of a number of fictions that the film delicately weaves together: the secret of the heart of another woman, lost as well, many years ago; the secret of the life of a village in the countryside, governed by a supernatural incident that nobody seems to perceive; the secret of the plains, which never ceases to spread and devour everything, like the shadows that invade the world after the twilight hour.

Trenque Lauquen was an official selection at Venice Film Festival, San Sebastian Film Festival, New York Film Festival, Rotterdam Film Festival and Göteborg Film Festival. The film received its UK Premiere at the Edinburgh International Film Festival and is screening at Lewes Depot on Sunday, 19 November, as part of the CINECITY Brighton Film Festival.

Directed by Laura Citarella and written by Laura Citarella and Laura Paredes. Trenque Lauquen is from the acclaimed El Pampero Cine collective (La Flor) and stars Laura Paredes, Ezequiel Pierri, Rafael Spregelburd, Cecilia Rainero, Juliana Muras, Elisa Carricajo and Verónica Llinás

Trenque Lauquen – Parts 1 & 2 are in cinemas and on Curzon Home Cinema on 8 December

Runtime:

Part 1: 2 hours 8 mins, Part 2: 2 hours 12 mins

Born and raised on the harsh streets of Magadan, a frigid outpost of the Soviet gulag, Gena is only 21. She stages radical performances in public that become a new form of art and activism. By doing that, she wants to change people’s perception of beauty and queerness and bring attention to the harassment of the LGBTQ+ community.

The performances – often dark, strange, evocative, and queer at their core – are a manifestation of Gena’s subconscious. But they come at a price.

MARY HARRON’S DALILAND ARRIVES ON DVD AND DIGITAL NOVEMBER 13

The director of American Psycho delves into a crucial period during the later years of legendary artist Salvador Dalí in this compelling, critically acclaimed drama inspired by a true story.

Amidst the decadence of 1970s New York, the great surrealist artist Salvador Dali enjoyed the latter stage of his career, living a lifestyle filled with luxury and extravagant parties. Surrounded by his own decadence and his band of eccentric followers who worship his charismatic persona, he is content with avoiding a fast-approaching art show and the demands of his formidable wife, Gala.

The story is told through the eyes of James Linton, a young gallery assistant keen to make his name in the art world. After quickly becoming enraptured by the provocative world of Dali, the façade begins to fade when he uncovers that behind the glitz and glamour lies a fragile genius, haunted by the past and unprepared for the changing tide of the world around him.

The film, which saw its world premiere at TIFF, boasts a commanding lead performance from Oscar winner Sir Ben Kingsley (Gandhi) opposite Barbara Sukowa (Two of Us), Rupert Graves (V for Vendetta), Suki Waterhouse (Daisy Jones & The Six), Andreja Pejic (The Girl in the Spider’s Web), Ezra Miller (The Flash), and rising star Christopher Briney (The Summer I Turned Pretty).

Daliland is directed by Mary Harron, celebrated for the revered cult classic American Psycho and the multi-award-winning series Alias Grace. Harron is well-versed in depicting artists with complicated legacies, as seen in her previous films, I Shot Andy Warhol, The Notorious Bettie Page and Anna Nicole.

BOY CULTURE: GENERATION X ARRIVES ON DIGITAL NOV 7

Boy Culture: Generation X, the sequel to the trailblazing drama Boy Culture (2006), will be released on November 7, 2023, on all TV on-demand platforms.  The original film’s stars, Derek Magyar (X) and Darryl Stephens (Andrew), are returning in their iconic roles, as is the entire original creative team — director and co-writer Q. Allan Brocka, producers Stephen Israel and Philip Pierce and co-writer Matthew Rettenmund.

More than a decade after the events of the first film, Boy Culture: Generation X finds X and Andrew, the on-again, off-again couple, now both 40, broken up and tensely sharing a home out of financial necessity. When X attempts to plunge back into his previous job as a sex worker, he’s in for a rude awakening — he’s no longer the flavour of the month, and the entire industry has been transformed by changing attitudes, online platforms and PreP.

X reluctantly turns to a bratty Gen Z twink named Chayce (Jason Caceres) to guide him back into the business.

Director and co-writer Brocka says the original film, cited among the 200 Best LGBTQ+ Movies of All Time by Rotten Tomatoes, resonated because it showed LGBTQ+ relationships “in a positive way that embraced our sexuality and sexual experiences. There were not a lot of films doing this unless they focused on our trauma.”

Of Boy Culture: Generation X, he says, “The original focused on taking a risk to find love. Now, X has had love, and something’s not quite working, so he’s got to refocus on himself — who is he outside of love?”

However, Hayley’s dad, Geoff, insisted on handling his family’s side of the booking, and something clearly got lost in translation. After a mix-up with transport at the airport, the two tribes end up at each other’s accommodations on different sides of a valley and opposite ends of the Tripadvisor rating scale. Can Hayley and James’ relationship survive another turbulent family Christmas, or has their future together gone off-piste?

GET YOUR TISSUES READY; IT’S NEARLY TIME TO SAY GOODBYE TO SEX EDUCATION

Today, Netflix released the trailer for the fourth and final season of the hit show Sex Education

This season marks the last hurrah for the Moordale gang, who have graced our screens since 2019. It’s now time to get those tissues ready and say goodbye with eight new episodes, including a bumper series finale running to 83 minutes. It’s going to be one hell of a ride – let’s finish together.

Following the closure of Moordale Secondary, Otis and Eric now face a new frontier – their first day at Cavendish Sixth Form College. Otis is nervous about setting up his new clinic, whilst Eric is praying they won’t be losers again.

However, Cavendish is a culture shock for all the Moordale students – they thought they were progressive, but this new college is at another level. There’s daily yoga in the communal garden, a strong sustainability vibe and a group of kids who are popular for being… kind?! Viv is totally thrown by the college’s student-led, non-competitive approach, while Jackson is still struggling to get over Cal. Aimee tries something new by taking an Art A-Level, and Adam grapples with whether mainstream education is for him. Over in the US, Maeve is living her dream at the prestigious Wallace University, being taught by cult author Thomas Molloy. Otis is pining after her whilst adjusting to not being an only child at home or the only therapist on campus…

Asa Butterfield leads the cast as Otis Milburn, alongside Gillian Anderson, Ncuti Gatwa, Aimee-Lou Wood, Emma Mackey, Connor Swindells, Kedar Williams-Stirling, Mimi Keene, George Robinson, Chinenye Ezeudu, Dua Saleh, Alistair Petrie, Samantha Spiro, Jim Howick, Rakhee Thakrar and Daniel Ings.

Joining them for the final season will be Emmy award-winning actor and Schitt’s Creek star Dan Levy, Thaddea Graham (Doctor Who), Lisa McGrillis (Somewhere Boy), Marie Reuther (Kamikaze), actress and model Jodie Turner-Smith, comedian Eshaan Akbar and newcomers Felix Mufti, Anthony Lexa, Alexandra James, Reda Elazouar, Bella Maclean and Imani Yahshua.

Earlier in July, Netflix announced season four would be the final season of the show alongside an open letter to fans from the Creator, Lead Writer and Executive Producer, Laurie Nunn, who said: “We are incredibly proud of Sex Education and feel indebted to our brilliant writers, cast and crew who put so much heart into making every episode. They have worked tirelessly to bring you the final series, and we can’t wait to share it with you.”

ARROW VIDEO ANNOUNCES THE ARRIVAL OF MARIO BAVA’S INFLUENTIAL HORROR BLOOD AND BLACK LACE IN STUNNING 4K

BFI CELEBRATES THE CAREER OF SIR HORACE OVÉ IN AUTUMN 2023 WITH A NEW 4K RESTORATION OF PRESSURE

The BFI is delighted to announce that the work of Sir Horace Ové, the celebrated photographer, painter and writer best known as a pioneering filmmaker, is being honoured this autumn with a BFI Southbank retrospective season, Power to the People: Horace Ové’s Radical Vision and a UK-wide cinema release of his pioneering debut feature, PRESSURE (1975), in a 4K restoration.

Originally funded by the BFI Production Board and restored by the BFI National Archive and The Film Foundation, with funding provided by the Hobson/Lucas Family Foundation, PRESSURE was heralded as the first full-length Black British film and is as relevant now, almost 50 years on, as it ever was. Ové’s groundbreaking exploration of the anxieties of an emerging second-generation of West Indians in Britain receives a joint restoration World Premiere at the 67th BFI London Film Festival in partnership with American Express at BFI Southbank and as a Revivals selection at the 61st New York Film Festival on October 11, ahead of the film’s UK-wide cinema release by BFI Distribution and on BFI Player on 3 November.

Spanning four decades and described by writer Caryl Phillips as occupying a unique place in British cinema, Horace Ové’s filmography has encompassed cutting-edge drama and documentary, as well as programmes examining music (REGGAE), culture (KING CARNIVAL, SKATEBOARD KINGS) and the visual arts.

This November, BFI Southbank will host a retrospective season of Ové’s film and television work, Power to the People: Horace Ové’s Radical Vision. At a time when telling authentic Black stories on mainstream broadcast media was incredibly limited, Ové broke through barriers at the BBC and Channel 4 to create films that truly represented a multi-cultural Britain, told with an integrity that reflected his own values and political convictions. Films such as A HOLE IN BABYLON (1979), THE GARLAND (1981) and PLAYING AWAY (1985) all hold up a mirror, fusing political activism and a neo-realist approach to cinema to create narratives that capture the essence of people and place a multi-cultural Britain.

Horace Ové’s enduring legacy has inspired a whole generation of diverse Black British filmmakers and artists, including Menelik Shabazz, John Akomfrah, Isaac Julien, Julien Henriques, Ngozi Onwurah, Steve McQueen, Amma Asante, Raine Allen-Mille and Dionne Edwards, to name but a few. Sir Horace Ové was knighted in the 2022 New Year Honours for services to the media.

Kaz Ové for the Ové family said: “The restoration of PRESSURE was a revelation when watching it on the big screen, beautiful and vivid once again, we were seeing images and moments with a clarity probably not seen since the first screenings in 1976. The BFI have done an incredible job, Horace would be extremely proud that the film, its themes, ideas and aesthetics can now be seen as they should be and for generations to come.”

On the restoration, Arike Oke, BFI Executive Director of Knowledge and Collections, said: PRESSURE is one of master artist Ové’s most vital works; for the BFI National Archive teams, The Film Foundation and our partners at Silver Salt and Molinare to bring this film back to audiences has been an honour for us. More than a key title in Black British cinema history, this film captures the spirit of its generation, of its community. We hope that our expert and keen-eyed restoration work, completed with the guidance from the Ové family, means that even more people can feel, hear and experience the power of PRESSURE now, and into the future.”
