Mary Queen of Scots is at its best when exploring the power dynamics and societal boundaries of two of history’s most fascinating female leaders.
Ronan and Robbie give solid and emotive performances of strength and vulnerability. However, despite a superb cast and script, Mary’s story suffers from a loose play with history that skips large parts of Mary’s story. This is a film would have been stronger focussing on a tighter snap-shot of Mary’s life similar to that of 1998’s Elizabeth. Mary’s journey is a fascinating part of our history, and while Mary Queen of Scots shines in many places, it could have achieved much more.
