James Cameron is well known for pushing the technological boundaries of film, and Alita does not disappoint in this area. Alita is visually stunning in its landscape and ambition. However for all its visual stimulation Alita feels mundane and you come away with a sense that it has offered nothing new to the science fiction landscape. Alita’s story treads familiar ground, never providing the audience with something new or fresh. Direction from Rodriguez is solid as are performances, but there is little to no emotional attachment, and action sequences plod rather than ignite. It’s end paves the way for a franchise rather than giving a solid conclusion to a first outing. Alita does have moments of brilliance but equally feels empty, and we can only hope the sequel manages to rectify its problems.
