Quick Read Review
James Cameron is well known for pushing the technological boundaries of film, and Alita does not disappoint in this area. Creating a film that is visually stunning in its landscape and ambition. However, for all its visual stimulation Alita: Battle Angel lacks bite. Ultimately feeling mundane and void of anything new.
Part of the problem for Alita comes from a story that treads familiar sci-fi ground. The overarching narrative never pushing or challenging the audience it seeks to embrace. And while direction from Rodriguez is solid, it cannot help the weak and disappointing story. Performances are equally solid, but lack emotional attachment to the characters.
Alita may well do enough to pave the way for a further outing in the future, however, whether that outing will sought or needed by a wider audience is a matter up for debate.
